A new Zogby Analytics Poll shows President Barack Obama with a 47% positive job approval, while 49% disapprove. The new online poll of 843 likely voters nationwide was conducted January 19 and 20 and has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.4 percentage points.

The new poll shows the President doing better among men (49%-51%) than women (46%-53%) and still doing better among younger voters (57%-33% with 18-29 year olds and 55%-43% with 30-49 year olds) than with older voters (42%-56% among 50-64 year olds and only 30%-69% with those over 65).

This poll continues to reveal why leading Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton embraces Mr. Obama in her public statements: 83% of Democrats and 91% of liberals approve of the job the President is doing. Mr. Obama also does well among moderate (52%-45%) and hits 40% approval among independents, something he has not done in over a year in Zogby Polls.

While white voters only allow a 37% approval rating (to 59% disapproval), Mr. Obama continues to receive wide support among both Hispanics (64%-32%) and African Americans (89%-11%).

Members of the Investor Class (53%), voters who live in union households (60%), NASCAR Fans (50%) and those in the Creative Class (57%) all give decent to high grades.

On the other hand, there is sobering news for Mr. Obama. Only 31% believe that the United States is headed in the right direction while 57% say things are off on the wrong track. Partisanship reigns supreme on this barometric reading: Democrats (56%) and liberals (67%) are more sanguine about how things are going, while only 9% of Republicans and 12% of conservative have positive feelings about the direction of the country.

There is also a vast racial divide with only 24% of whites feeling things are headed in the right direction while 52% of Hispanics and 63% of African Americans feel that way.

Repeating a question we have used since the Presidency of Bill Clinton, only 44% are proud that Barack Obama is President of the United States while 42% saying they ashamed. This, to no one' surprise, is intensely partisan with 79% of Democrats proud (13% ashamed), while only 12% of Republicans are proud (75% ashamed). Only slightly better than a third (35%) of independents say they are proud Mr. Obama is President while 43% are ashamed.

And again there is a sharp racial divergence with whites 37% proud and 48% ashamed vs. Hispanics (56% proud and 38% ashamed) and African Americans (85% proud and 9% ashamed).
