Slip in Democratic Support Hurts Obama & Party's Candidates
UTICA, New York - The latest Zogby Interactive survey found Republicans again taking the lead on the question of which party's candidate likely voters plan to vote for on Nov. 2, and also showed a small drop in President Barack Obama's job approval rating.
The survey of 1,963 likely voters conducted from Oct. 12-14 has Republicans leading the Congressional generic ballot preference over Democrats, 49%-40%. A previous Zogby Interactive poll concluded on Oct. 11 showed the two parties tied at 45%-45%.
The percentage of voters approving of the President's job performance is now 44%, down from 49% in the previous poll.
Much of the drop for both Democratic Congressional candidates and President Obama came among Democratic voters. In the Oct. 11 poll, the percentages of Democrats approving of Obama's performance and saying they would vote for Democratic Congressional candidates were both 88%. The latest survey has 79% of Democrats approving of the job Obama is doing and 80% choosing Democratic Congressional candidates.
Republican Congressional candidates continue to lead among independent voters, 49%-31%. Obama's job approval is 42% among independents.

In other findings:
- 31% of likely voters say the nation is headed in the right direction, and 60% say it is off on the wrong track, which is a slight increase in negative feeling from the Oct. 11 poll.
- The job approval of Congress is 20%. Approval of Congressional Democrats' performance is 34%, and approval of Congressional Republicans is 28%.
Pollster John Zogby: "Republicans continue to a hold a solid lead among independent voters in the Congressional generic ballot, and Democrats seem unable to solidify the same level of support from their party base that Republicans are consistently getting. If both those trends continue, Nov. 2 will be a joyous night for Republicans."
The interactive poll consisted of 1,963 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/-2.2%. A sampling of Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the U.S., was invited to participate. Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, and education to more accurately reflect the population.
