78% Will Put Up Christmas Tree & 58% Will Decorate Outside

UTICA, New York - The economy may still be frightful for many Americans, but high numbers of U.S. adults still want the holiday to be delightfully bright and cheery.

A Zogby Interactive poll conducted from November 19-22 found that:

  • 78% will put up and decorate a Christmas tree
  • 58% will put up lights or decorations outside their residence
  • 58% will make a donation to charity
  • 53% will attend a religious service
  • 37% will host a party
  • 25% will volunteer or provide some community service
  • 5% will go caroling
  • 4% will light a Menorah

Only 6% will do none of these traditional holiday activities.

A majority (60%) say the day after Thanksgiving is when they prefer seeing signs of the season, such as decorations, store displays and holiday music. Preferring a later start in December, just before Christmas, are 16%, and 18% are ready for the season to begin in November prior to Thanksgiving.

The Nov. 19-22, 2010 interactive poll consisted of 2,055 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of +/-2.2%.  A sampling of Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the U.S., was invited to participate.  Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, and education to more accurately reflect the population.
